When you’re feeling overwhelmed by emotion…
Take a deep breath and a step back.
Ask yourself some questions to gain some perspective.
Will I care about this one week from now? A month? A year?
What do I need?
Are there some boundaries I need to reinforce?
What self care or coping skills can I use?
What worked for me the last time I felt this way?
Is this worth spending my emotional energy and time on?
Do I own this?
Is this an urgent matter or something I can sit on for a bit?
What is the goal or outcome l'd like to see?
Am I hungry or tired?
What will my tomorrow-self tell me about my today-self?
When we're able to gain perspective, recognize that our feelings aren't facts, we feel less overwhelmed by our emotions and are better able to proceed rationally and intentionally instead of allowing our emotions to drive our behavior.
